Religious Use Statement
The theological and constitutional basis for the sacramental practice
of the temple of harm reduction.
This statement sets forth the sincere religious beliefs and sacramental practices of the temple of harm reduction, a religious organization a Nevada nonprofit corporation, and with Followers engaging in religious activity across the United States. It is offered both as a declaration of conscience and as a record of the bona fides of the Temple’s religious exercise under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (42 U.S.C. § 2000bb), RLUIPA where applicable, and the state Religious Freedom Restoration Acts and other religious-liberty protections of the jurisdictions in which our Followers reside or gather.
the temple of harm reduction is not affiliated with any government agency. The Temple is not a medical provider, a treatment program, or a substitute for medical care. The Temple is a church.
What This Statement Is Not
This statement is not legal advice. It is not a license to violate any law. It is not a substitute for the advice of qualified counsel. Members and visitors who have legal questions about their own conduct in their own jurisdiction should consult an attorney.
This statement is not a claim that the Temple’s practices place its members beyond the reach of law. It is a claim that those practices are protected by law. The two are not the same. We comply with law that does not substantially burden our religious exercise. We assert protection against law that does.
This statement is not, finally, an exhaustive account of the Temple’s theology. It is the portion of that theology necessary to articulate the religious basis of our practice. Other writings of the Temple speak to the broader spiritual life of our congregation.
